Emergency boiler quote checklist

No heating or hot water and you need someone today? Seven things to have ready so a small shortlist of local Gas Safe registered installers can quote you properly the first time.

  • Gas work only goes to installers who give us a Gas Safe number
  • Never more than three local firms on your job
  • Free to use, with no obligation to go ahead
  1. Step 1

    Make it safe first

If you can smell gas or suspect fumes, stop reading and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Open windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely, and do not switch anything electrical on or off.

  2. Step 2

Note what the boiler is telling you

Write down the fault code on the display, the make and model from the front panel, and roughly how old the boiler is. An installer can size up the job far faster with those three things.

  3. Step 3

    Check the simple things

Is the pressure gauge in the normal band? Has the thermostat lost battery power? Has an RCD tripped in the consumer unit? None of this replaces an engineer's visit, but it saves an unnecessary call-out.

  4. Step 4

    Photograph the installation

One clear photo of the boiler, one of the pipework beneath it, and one of the flue outside. Installers can rule work in or out from photos before they set a time.

  5. Step 5

    Sort out access and timing

Know when someone over 18 can be at the property, where the stopcock and meter are, and whether parking needs a permit. Emergency slots go to the jobs that can actually be attended.

  6. Step 6

Ask each installer the same questions

Is the quote fixed or an estimate? What is included, parts, labour, making good, disposal of the old unit? What warranty applies and who registers it? When could the work start?

  7. Step 7

    Check the registration yourself

Anyone working on your gas appliances must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask for the card, then check the details on the official Gas Safe Register website. We are not the Gas Safe Register and cannot confirm registration on an installer's behalf.

Repair or replace?

That call belongs to the engineer who has seen the appliance. Age, parts availability, and the condition of the system all matter. If replacement is on the table, our guide to combi vs system vs regular explains the three types.

BoilerMatch UK introduces homeowners to local heating installers and you decide who, if anyone, you hire. We are not the Gas Safe Register, we do not fit or repair boilers ourselves, and any quote, work or warranty is agreed directly between you and the installer.
